British Pendulum Testing & Training
Understand Slip Resistance. Ensure Safety.
As awareness of British Pendulum Testing (BPT) grows across industries, we’re receiving more inquiries about how it works and how to get properly trained. At SlipDoctors, we’re committed to helping professionals, facility managers, and contractors understand this essential slip resistance standard.
What Is Pendulum Slip Testing?
Pendulum slip testing is a scientifically validated method used to measure the slip resistance of flooring and other walking surfaces. It calculates the amount of force required to cause a calibrated swinging arm (the pendulum) to slip on a test surface.
Results are expressed as:
- PTV (Pendulum Test Value) or
- COF (Coefficient of Friction)
These values help determine whether a floor meets industry safety requirements.
Higher PTV = Greater Slip Resistance
For example, a PTV of 50 or higher is generally considered a safe threshold in many settings.
Testing Standard: ASTM E303
SlipDoctors uses equipment and procedures that align with ASTM E303, a recognized standard for measuring surface friction using the British Pendulum. This method is widely adopted internationally and is trusted by regulatory bodies, engineers, and manufacturers.
Who Needs Pendulum Slip Testing?
Pendulum testing is ideal for evaluating surfaces in:
- Commercial kitchens and restaurants
- Hospitals and care facilities
- Shopping centres and supermarkets
- Swimming pool decks
- Schools and universities
- Industrial and production zones
- Outdoor public spaces and pavements
It is also commonly used by flooring manufacturers to certify product compliance with industry standards.
