With the right preparation and coating system, it is possible to refresh the appearance of a concrete floor while also improving traction underfoot.

A recent SlipDoctors customer project provides a good example. The customer wanted to improve the concrete floor in a small home storage area. The existing surface had visible stains, marks and remnants of previous paint, so the project was not simply about adding slip resistance, it was also an opportunity to give the entire space a cleaner, more finished appearance.

A Real-World Concrete Floor Transformation

Before application, the concrete floor showed years of use, with different colored marks and stains visible across the surface.

Rather than leaving the existing concrete exposed, the customer coated the floor with Dura Grip to create a more uniform finish while adding a textured anti-slip surface.

This is one of the advantages of using a colored anti-slip coating rather than treating traction and appearance as two separate problems.

Improving Traction Doesn't Mean Ignoring Appearance

Floor safety is naturally the primary reason many people discover SlipDoctors products, but appearance can be just as important when renovating a residential or commercial space.

Surface Preparation Is Critical on Concrete

The finished coating is only part of a successful concrete floor project.

Correct surface preparation is essential for adhesion and long-term coating performance.

Concrete coatings require the surface to have the correct profile before application. For Dura Grip, concrete should have a minimum Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) of 3–4.

The surface must also be correctly cleaned and prepared, and the appropriate primer should be used where required.

New concrete should be allowed to cure sufficiently before coating, while existing concrete needs to be evaluated for contaminants, previous coatings and other conditions that could interfere with adhesion.

What About Garage Floors?

Dura Grip can also be used on garage floors, but the way the garage is used matters.

If the coating will be exposed to hot tire traffic, a two-part top coat is required to protect the Dura Grip coating and help prevent hot-tire marks.

Dura Grip is not recommended for areas exposed to constant tire traffic.

This is an important distinction because a residential garage used for storage, occasional parking or other activities can present very different requirements from a floor experiencing frequent vehicle movement.

The surface, traffic, moisture exposure and intended use should therefore all be considered before choosing a coating system.

More Than Just Covering an Old Floor

One of the most useful lessons from this project is that improving floor safety does not necessarily mean compromising on appearance.

The original concrete floor was visibly marked and unfinished. Once coated, the same area had a much cleaner, more consistent finish while benefiting from the textured surface provided by Dura Grip.
